Once again, Troop 770 has a successful awards ceremony called a Court of Honor for their now 19 registered Boy Scouts. It was just 18 months ago when this troop was formed with just 7 Scouts. Today, this young Boy Scout boasts one of the most active Scouting programs in all of the Las Vegas BSA Council.

In addition, 10 of these boys received their Hiking Merit Badge which requires (among other things) that they complete a minimum of five 10+ mile day hikes and one 20 mile day hike. This is one of the “coveted” Boy Scout merit badges to earn.

Among the awards issued at this event was Troop 770’s first Life Scout rank which was awarded to a Scout who transferred into the troop as a Star Scout about 1 year ago. In addition, the original founders of Troop 770 where honored with the unique “founders bar” which is worn on the BSA uniform just below the unit numbers on the left sleeve.

This awards ceremony marks the first one held at the Troop’s new permanent location at Temple Sinai in Las Vegas which provides the unit with a year round facility to hold meetings and events.

The Scouts were at it again on their second backpack training trek into the Cucamonga Wilderness. This time, for 3 days of hiking and 2 nights in beautiful primitive campgrounds.

Rewarded with beautiful weather, Troop 770 made it easily into Third Stream Crossing campground within a short 2 hour hike up from 4,000 feet to 5,600 feet. This time, the lower camp area was available so the Scouts were rewarded by setting up camp along side the Middle Fork river making it easier to purify water and providing additional natural ambiance. Using Philmont Scout Reservation techniques, the Scouts set up camp complete with dining fly, sump (for waste water), a leave no trace style cooking and eating area and of course, sleeping area.

On day 2, the Scouts made a quick visit to the “hidden waterfall” before heading up trail to Comanche Campground. This 1.3 mile hike proved to have numerous technical challenges where the trail was completely washed out from years of erosion and a lack of trail maintenance. The Scouts decided to make camp about 300 yards past the official Comanche camp area where there was a small spring of water available. That afternoon, Scoutmaster Williams taught a wilderness navigation course and the Scouts played a game of hide-n-seek before making one of the troop’s most delicious backcountry meals — pesto bowtie pasta with chicken, kalamata olives, sun dried tomatoes and garlic.

Day 3 was simply a pack up and go day down the roughly 2,500 feet of elevation back to the cars and making only one important stop before Las Vegas to enjoy a wonderful meal at Peggy Sue’s Diner in Barstow California.

The Klondike Derby is one of the fun activities many Boy Scouts participate in each year. This year, Troop 770, instead of a traditional Klondike Derby was invited by Troop 430 to participate in their annual desert version known as the “Sands of Arabia.” For this event, the Scouts had to design, build and outfit a klondike derby sled that was both sturdy enough to hold up to the task of hauling gear around the desert and portable enough to transport to and from the event in regular vehicles.

In order to achieve these objectives, the Scouts used a sled design that is put together using numerous lashings, hitches and other Boy Scout knots so that the sled can be transported in a deconstructed form. Once they practice some more during troop meetings, they are hoping to be able to put their sleds together in about 30 minutes.

Here are the photos of the Scouts building their sleds for the first time:

On January 22nd during the annual Bighorn District Diner, the Scoutmaster of Troop 770 Brian Williams received the District Award of Merit.

This award is given to BSA volunteers who go above and beyond their duties to serve at both the unit and district level. Scoutmaster Williams founded the recently formed Troop 770 and currently serves at the district level as the Webelos transition chairperson as well as assists with the training program for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters.

Scoutmaster Williams said, “I am honored to have received this recognition. It’s been a long time since I received a Scout award and it feels good.” He further said, “I look forward to continuing my service to local Las Vegas Scouting and doing my best to help our young men and women build character and community leadership.”

Troop 770 is one of the most active units in the Las Vegas Area Council and offers monthly high adventure and overnight programs for boys from ages 11 to 18. They recently completed over 100 miles of local hiking to earn the hiking merit badge and are now heading out into the backcountry for multi-day backpacking treks in Nevada, Arizona and California. Their program also includes an annual river trek on the Colorado River and a family campout to Zion National Park. This year they are also heading to Sequoia National Park in California for a week long Boy Scout summer camp.

One of the biggest challenges young Boy Scouts face is completing long hikes and one of the longest is the 20 mile hike requirement for the Hiking Merit Badge. No matter how you slice it, this is an all day event, walking on your feet with a 15 to 25 pound backpack full of water, food and gear including the 10 essentials.

For their 20 mile hike requirement, the boys at Troop 770 decided to do something a bit different and instead of venturing out into one of the many wilderness areas that surround Las Vegas, they completed a 20 mile loop around the Las Vegas city starting at the convention center at 6:30am. By the time they completed their 20 mile round trip including a very welcome stop at Denny’s on Tropicana, it was 6:15pm. The hiking merit badge requirements state that the 20 mile hike must be completed in a single day with no extended rests (i.e. no sleeping out over night).

These Scouts also have completed 5 10+ mile hikes leading up to this last one so each of these 9 boys will receive their award at their next award ceremony.

Congratulations to all of them for completing this most challenging merit badge.

The boys, dressed in their Class A Boy Scout Uniforms, served food and drinks and made sure that everyone was enjoying their meal. Afterwards, the Scouts were treated to their own meal which they really enjoyed.

The young Scouts of Troop 770 in Las Vegas are well on their way to earning the challenging Hiking Merit Badge. The requirements include that the Scouts must complete at least five 10 mile or more day hikes and one 20 miler more day hike in addition to learning various outdoor navigation (orienteering) skills, first aid skills and hiking safety.

Today’s hike took the Scouts around the White Rock Loop in Red Canyon Canyon plus a side trip to La Madre Spring and another side trip to Keystone Thrust. All told the Boy Scouts hike about 11 miles.
