The Klondike Derby is one of the fun activities many Boy Scouts participate in each year. This year, Troop 770, instead of a traditional Klondike Derby was invited by Troop 430 to participate in their annual desert version known as the “Sands of Arabia.” For this event, the Scouts had to design, build and outfit a klondike derby sled that was both sturdy enough to hold up to the task of hauling gear around the desert and portable enough to transport to and from the event in regular vehicles.

In order to achieve these objectives, the Scouts used a sled design that is put together using numerous lashings, hitches and other Boy Scout knots so that the sled can be transported in a deconstructed form. Once they practice some more during troop meetings, they are hoping to be able to put their sleds together in about 30 minutes.
