Last year, when the boys of brand new Boy Scout Troop 770 were planning their annual calendar of activities, they unanimously voted to go on their first ever canoe camp outing. Nearly one year later, their wishes came true as they set 7 canoes and 2 kayaks in the Colorado River from the base of the famous Hoover Dam to the marina at Willow Beach.

For three days, the young boys of this active Summerlin area Las Vegas Boy Scout Troop paddled down the majestic Black Canyon. This was the first time any of these young men participated in a high adventure river trek where they hauled all of their gear including cooking equipment, tents, food and personal items to enjoy 2 nights of remote camping along the Colorado River.

With air temperatures in the 100’s and water temperatures in the low 50’s, the boys prepared for the challenges of these conditions by learning how to use light weight cooking stoves, water purification pumps and plan for simple meals that nourish the body without spoiling in the summer heat. The most important ingredient for survival is water and for this, the boys purified the water directly from the Colorado River for drinking and for cooking. This was a first for everyone.

Some of the highlights on this canoe/kayak trek included:

  1. Launching the canoes and kayaks at the base of Hoover Dam
  2. Exploring the hot springs and ropes course in Boy Scout Canyon
  3. Camping along the Colorado River at Arizona Hot Springs
  4. Jumping off the rocks and into the icy cold pools along the Colorado River
  5. Seeing big horn sheep
  6. Being under a brilliant night full of billions of stars and seeing shooting stars
  7. Completing the 12.7 mile journey as a team by paddling a canoes
