One of the biggest challenges young Boy Scouts face is completing long hikes and one of the longest is the 20 mile hike requirement for the Hiking Merit Badge. No matter how you slice it, this is an all day event, walking on your feet with a 15 to 25 pound backpack full of water, food and gear including the 10 essentials.
For their 20 mile hike requirement, the boys at Troop 770 decided to do something a bit different and instead of venturing out into one of the many wilderness areas that surround Las Vegas, they completed a 20 mile loop around the Las Vegas city starting at the convention center at 6:30am. By the time they completed their 20 mile round trip including a very welcome stop at Denny’s on Tropicana, it was 6:15pm. The hiking merit badge requirements state that the 20 mile hike must be completed in a single day with no extended rests (i.e. no sleeping out over night).
These Scouts also have completed 5 10+ mile hikes leading up to this last one so each of these 9 boys will receive their award at their next award ceremony.
Congratulations to all of them for completing this most challenging merit badge.
